2011/12 mid season update

It is hard to believe that we are now into the second half of 2011/12 ski season already, it really has gone by quick this Winter. We had a great Indian Summer pre season that threatened to carry on for too long. Normally I do not worry too much about a lack of snow in the pre-season but I will confess that this year I was starting to get anxious, especially when December arrived and the snow line was still up near the higher peaks.
Around the 4th December the snow finally arrived and thankfully fell regularly throughout December and January with over five and a half metres of snow falling on the upper slopes above Meribel and Courchevel over the 2 month period. Now we have as good a base as Anne and I have seen over the 16 seasons we have been here.
After the heavy snows came the cold snap which lasted a few weeks. A persistent northeasterly wind, known locally as 'la bise', produced extremely cold temperatures, it was great for the snow but with the temperatures falling below -20C it was getting difficult, vehicles were beginning to struggle, diesel freezing, water pipes freezing,..
That has now passed with more normal temperatures returning over the last few days.
We are now looking forward to the remainder of the season and hope to get in a decent amount of time skiing and take advantage of the amazing snow. The picture below was taken earlier in the week.

Spring has arrived

Some people will argue that spring arrived in January with the run of weather we have had this season, but there is a real spring feel her at the moment. The ski season is flying by yet again and it is hard to believe it is mid March already.
Despite negative press reports in the UK the skiing is still good, yesterday was fantastic with new snow, blue sky day and very few people around. The off piste has started to come good again, especially on the upper slopes where we have had several snowfalls in recent weeks. Anne is on the snow this afternoon making the most of another sunny day.
We still have availability for April and have some amazing last minute and short break deals

Meribel 2011 ski season begins

It was a blue sky day with great snow for the opening day of the 2011 ski season in Meribel yesterday.
Mark and Rebecca from chalet Grange a Charlotte managed a few hours on their skis/board, they said it was enough for their first day back on the snow.

Here they are getting ready at the start of the day with the Truite piste behind them, looks fantastic for this time of year.
I had the skis on for a few hours around midday. This was purely for work purposes of course as it is important that I can pass on the information to our chalet clients. I think Annie understands that!!??
The conditions were superb if anyone needs to know.

Late afternoon ski, access on snowshoes

After a lazy day I set off up the folyeres piste in LaTania on snow shoes this afternoon. It was getting quite late in the day and the light was starting to disappear forcing me to stop sooner than I would have liked. At the point where the cross-country trail crosses the piste I removed my backpack holding my ski boots with skis strapped to the side.I changed gear before skiing back down to La Tania, it was a nice way to finish the day .

The ski down was tricky with the skis turning easily in the new snow that fell this week only to see them disappear under a crust each time I passed a snow cannon. Despite this the conditions continue to look promising for the lifts opening in La Tania and Meribel in 2 weeks time. The base appears to be established now and the snow cannons have also been busy making small mountains.
The news gets better with more snow forecast this week.

First ski of the season in Val Thorens

Welcome to the new Ski Hame blog, I will be stopping the old one this week.

Anne and I went for a short ski yesterday. It was a nice day so we made the trip across to Val Thorens in the afternoon. This was the opening weekend for the area with good ski conditions for this time of year. Aiden was with us so we just did a few runs each on the piste before retiring to the mall for an afternoon snack then back home. It was a great way to spend our Sunday afternoon and nice to get the skis back on.
